Newton Rebels

Joining a local Library and Friends expedition, I visited the small village of Newton, outside Kettering, where the Church of St Faith has been turned into a field study centre.

Newton is what remains of a cluster of medieval villages which took part in a series of enclosures insurrections that spread across Northamptonshire in 1607 – and local researchers have found out more, created a website and erected an information board.

A small skirmish ensued, and over 40 peasants were killed as forces raised by the local landowners put down the revolt …
